Abstract

Hypertension is the number one disease in Indonesia, which reaches 25.6% of the measurement results at the age above 18 years. Treatment of non pharmacological hypertension with complementary therapy, one of them is progressive muscle relaxation(PMR) therapy. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of PMR therapy on blood pressure in primary hypertensive patients at the 2018 Nanggalo Padang Health Center. This type of research design is Quasy Experiment with the design of One Group Pretest-Posttest conducted on 11-17 February 2018, with a sample size of 10 respondents. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately by paired sample t-test and Wilcoxon-test with a confidence level of 95%. The results obtained an average systolic blood pressure before being given PMR treatment was 152 mmHg and the average diastolic blood pressure before being given PMR treatment was 94 mmHg. The mean systolic blood pressure after PMR treatment was 139.5 mmHg and the average diastolic blood pressure after PMR treatment was 87.8 mmHg. There are differences in systolic blood pressure before and after PMR treatment with p value = 0.001 (p <0.05), and diastolic blood pressure before and after PMR treatment with p value = 0.007 (p <0.05) means that there is an effect of progressive muscle therapy relaxation (PMR) of blood pressure in primary hypertension patients at Nanggalo Padang Health Center. Progressive Muscle Relaxation technique can be used as one of physiotherapy measures to reduce blood pressure in primary hypertension patients.
